Nintendo Direct Reveals A Link to the Past Sequel and Earthbound for Virtual Console

As has become their traditional vehicle for release news, Nintendo broadcast a new Direct video this morning, showcasing a number of upcoming products (most for the 3DS), including several previously unanounced titles. After a series of not-so-subtle hints from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto over the past year, a 2.5D follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was unveiled for the 3DS. Set to be released this holiday, this sequel will retain familiar mechanics from the SNES classic, with the notable addition of the ability for the player to change Link into a drawing to traverse otherwise unreachable corners. An official name has not yet been specifed as of this writing, but expect to hear further details soon.

Nintendo Direct Recap: Crossovers, Zelda, and More!

A new Nintendo Direct video was broadcast earlier this morning, offering up several tantalizing details about future Wii U software titles. No less than 5 previously unannounced party games were unveiled today; including some of Nintendo's most popular franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Mario Kart. To that end, the fact that a new, currently untitled "Mario 3D Action Game" and Mario Kart title are in development should come as no surprise, more surprising, however, is how far along these titles are - both will be playable at E3 this June! The former is being helmed by Nintendo's EAD group, the same division responsible for the Super Mario Galaxy titles, as well as Super Mario 3D Land. Whether this mystery title end up being a third entry in the SMG series, or something new entirely remains to be seen.

Another exciting announcement, this one for fans of the Legend of Zelda franchise, occurred - the Wii U currently has not one, but two Zelda games currently in the works. The first, is a Wii U optimized HD Remake of Gamecube stalwart The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and the second is an all new game, built from the ground up. While details on the new Zelda game were deliberately scant at this point, Eiji Aonuma stated that one of his team's main goals is for the new game to "rethink the conventions" of the franchise; hinting that Nintendo is playing with the idea of implementing a non-linear dungeon structure and possibly even a multiplayer element to the storied franchise.

Nintendo didn't stop there, however. Despite having discussed three of their most popular franchises, they also announced that for the first time in 15 years, Yoshi is once again getting a game of his own. Yarn Yoshi (working title) is being developed by the team responsible for Kirby's Epic Yarn on the Wii, and will have a similar, textile-focused aesthetic. Expect colorful, charming visuals in Yoshi's new 2.5D platforming adventure.

Earlier this morning, Nintendo has released a full list of games that will be available in time for the Wii U's North American launch. Highlighted by numerous first party titles, as well as a strong third party lineup, the initial batch of Wii U software appears to offer something for everyone.

Wii U Launch Details Revealed

Following months of speculation, Nintendo has just announced the North American release date and pricing for the Wii U. At a brief preview event in New York, Nintendo President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed the following:

Wii U will launch on 11/18, and will ship in two editions

As was also the case in Japan, the Wii U will launch with two SkUs, a basic, white model with an 8gb SD card, and a deluxe, black model with a 32gb SD card. Both will include with the console, AC adapter, one Wii U gamepad, sensor bar, and cables. Additionally, the deluxe package will include NintendoLand packed in.

Wii U is backwards compatible

Wii U will be compatible will all Wii accessories, including the nunchuk, wii remotes, and wii balance board, and "most" Wii games.

Wii U is priced at $299.99 and $349.99, respectively

As widely anticipated, the Wii U starts as low as $299.99 for the basic model, and $349.99 for the Deluxe package.

Nintendo: All Access E3 Presentation - Play by Play

Nintendo held a surprisingly low key, Wii U focused press conference earlier today. Serving as a follow up of sorts to Sunday's Wii U oriented Nintendo Direct presentation, today's event consisted mainly of a Wii U software showcase. Shigeru Miyamoto began with a short Pikmin skit, hyping up the third game in the franchise by super-imposing the creatures on different audience members. Miyamoto continued by reiterating that the Wii U's goal was to reinvent the concept of the television/console relationship; the fact that consoles are dependent on the television is rather limiting. The Wii U was developed with it's own screen to circumvent this. Miyamoto stressed that he wanted the Wii U to be the first screen players and family would see when entering the living room. Pikmin 3 was first name-dropped several years ago, and it was thought it would be in development for the Wii. However, upon seeing the Wii U hardware in action, Miyamoto thought Pikmin 3 would be better suited on the Wii U and given an experience that isn't possible on any other platform.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous thanks to the horsepower of the new console. The gameplay of Pikmin 3 is very similar to the first two Pikmin, but Miyamoto found that the Wii U solved issues addressed in the first two games. He spoke of the camera issues, saying if it was too far away, one could see the landscape better, but couldn't see the Pikmin well enough to control them accurately. The Wii U has solved this puzzle, as one can see an expanded, natural setting on the Wii U game pad's screen, and the view on the television is more free because of this. The player can touch the map to more effectively place the Pikmin in different areas, and the game gets much more tactical because of this. The main game is controlled by aiming and throwing with the Wii remote and movement with the nunchuk. A new rock-type Pikmin was revealed, and it's uses were demonstrated by doling out more damage to enemies, and breaking down objects and obstacles faster than the other Pikmin types. Opening up multiplayer options was the announcement of four additional captains to control, but any information other than that will come at a later date. In closing, the hero of the previous Pikmin tiles, Capitain Olimar, was mysteriously absent from the title, and Miyamoto went on to say the reason for this was a secret.

When Reggie Fils-Aime took the stage, he promised 23 Wii U titles to hit the stage during the conference, though many of these were third party titles, teased in a sizzle reel. As has become a standard with any home console, planned Hulu Plus, Youtube, Amazon Video, and Netflix apps were announced to be available at launch, with "more on the way".
