Sony Press Event Highlights

Concluding a full day of E3 press conferences, Sony held their annual E3 event at the LA Memorial Sports Arena. Unlike most traditional press briefings, which generally run at most 2 hours, Sony opted for a much longer event. The day consisted of a pre-show reception, the press conference itself, hands on time with virtually everything announced, as well as a surprise musical performance from Jane's Addiction.

As expected, several major announcements took place - including, most notably, the projected release date, name, and final pricing of Sony's forthcoming NGP handheld. In a move that drew cheers from the audience, the pricing for the device was revealed to be significantly lower than expected. Read on after the jump for full pricing and release details for the NGP.

PSN has been down for almost a month now, but the company has been working hard to improve their security systems, but that hasn't changed their projected date for putting PSN back online. Shigenori Yoshida, a Tokyo-based Sony spokesman told Bloomberg yesterday that , "The company is in the process of adopting an improved security system and its plan to restart the services fully by May 31 is unchanged."

As a welcome back gift Sony has decided to gift two free games to both PS3 and PSP owners. PS3 users will be able to choose their two from a list of five and PSP have a list of four games to choose from. Sony posted this on their blog here.

Personal Info Hacked From PSN

PSN Logo

Easter weekend was a huge upset for PSN users. No one had access to anything on PSN and Sony only announced ambiguous messages that their servers had been hacked then telling people to wait while they solved the problem. Today Sony let loose that the personal information of some of their customers was "compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into [their] network." Sony made it sound like this was a very serious issue and their wording implied a large number of their accounts were hacked.

The hackers gained access to all of the personal data of PSN accounts. Hackers had access to a long list of personal data: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. They even mentioned the possibility of credit card information having been stolen. Sony followed up that statement with their three steps to minimize the damage.
