Portal 2 Review

Portal 2

Think with portals in the sequel to the award winning puzzler.

Valve's Portal 2 received a massive amount of hype before its release and shortly afterwards was punished by a harsh batch of initial user reviews, specifically on metacritic. Portal was a hit and is well loved by many fans for its puzzles and the outrageous hilarity of GlaDOS. That said, Portal 2 has a lot to live up to to stand on par with its predecessor. How does this much anticipated sequel stack up?

Portal was such a memorable game for two reasons: hard puzzles and the constant humor. Portal 2 does not disappoint in either of those two areas. The puzzles are just as hard as the first game and there are many more of them. The writing for the game is original, and very funny. At the same time, good writing only goes so far in a game. It was a smart choice by Valve to hire three great actors; Stephen Merchant, J.K. Simmons, and Ellen McLain, who reprises her role as GlaDOS. Throughout the course of the game, the voice acting is absolutely superb. There are parts where the game is intensely funny, particularly when J.K. Simmons (better known as Spiderman's J. Jonah Jameson), plays Cave Johnson. Expect hours of laughter in this game. Portal 2 follows the same difficulty progression that its predecessor did.

Minecraft Slated for 11/11/11

Minecraft will be officially released on 11/11/11, according to Notch's (Developer of Minecraft) blog. He personally says that it more like a right of passage mainly because they will be dropping the beta from there name. As of posting Minecraft is in Beta 1.4, recently adding tamable wolves and cookies!

“It’s a bit tricky to really do a release for Minecraft as we keep updating it all the time, For one, the version we deem as the ‘full version’ won’t be very different at all from what the game was like a week ago, and we’ll keep adding features after the release as well, so it’s really more of a milestone when we finally get rid of the Beta label, and some kind of goal for us to work towards. The plan is to be open with this and try to get people to cheer us on as much as possible, but to be open with the fact that the game won’t change much at the actual release day.” Notch said.

He also goes on to say that the next major features added in Minecraft 1.5 will be weather, and achievements and stats, both of which have been previously speculated about. Any features you would like to see in Minecraft? Leave your thoughts on that in the comments!

Total War: Shogun 2 Review

Total War Shogun 2

Take control of a Japanese army in this RTS sequel.

The Total War series, has gone back to its roots with the recent game in the series, and the result is a sequel to their original. For those of you unfamiliar with Total War, the series is best compared to a beefed up cross between Civilization and RiskTotal War: Shogun 2 is a beautiful advancement to the RTS genre.

Total War Shogun 2

Graphically, the game is far superior to all of its predecessors.  Although the graphical difference between their most recent Napoleon: Total War and this one are minimal, Shogun 2 has a much finer detail level than the other titles in the series. The map has been redesigned for his game. The whole of Japan looks like an old brown map, but as the player explores, it reveals the world with incredible detail.  A low end computer will struggle with this game. Some reviews have complained about long load time throughout the game and especially before battles, this is not an issue with a medium to high end machine.
