Serious Sam: Double D Review

Serious Sam Double D

Get serious in this over the top 2D shooter.

Mommy's Best Games, long known for their Xbox Live Indie Games, brings their unique talents to the Serious Sam series in Serious Sam: Double D. Unlike the other Serious Sam games, which have all up to this point been FPS titles, MBG has elected to give our donut loving, chainsaw wielding hero a 2D makeover. The result of this makeover, as it turns out, is nothing short of fantastic. Despite now being a 2D shoot-'em-up, surprisingly little has been lost in the new format. Many of the core gameplay elements from its FPS cousins; ranging from Gnaars, to the perpetually unseen antagonist Mental, to exotic locales are retained. The object here remains as simple as it has always been: kill any and everything that moves, before getting killed in the process. Expect massive amounts of action, a healthy assortment of weapons, and often screen filling bosses over the course of the game's 18 stages.

Serious Sam: Double D

Fans of Metal Slug will no doubt find themselves in familiar territory here, as there no small number of similarities between it, and Serious Sam: Double D. First and foremost, like its presumed inspiration, the action never lets up. From the onset, the player is tasked with facing a barrage of enemies, often by the dozens. Luckily, as with any Serious Sam title, firepower is in ample supply. Speaking of firepower, SSDD takes a different approach to gunplay. Instead of adhering to modern convention and allowing weapons to be modified, a unique "stacking" system is in place. Connectors can be acquired, allowing guns to be stacked together in a seemingly limitless number of combinations. Want to use a laser rifle, rockets, and a grenade launcher at the same time? Have at it! Up to four of any given weapon type can be added to a stack, and each stack can contain (with enough connectors) up to six weapons in total.

The Asskickers Review

The Asskickers

Kick some ass in this throwback to the days where the arcade was king.

The Asskickers is a 2D beat'em up sidescroller that gleefully pulls us back to the land of arcade style games. Playing games at the arcade guaranteed two things most of the time; Losing lots of money to those boxes of flashy lights and losing that money due to the pure difficulty of many of the titles available. That's where The Asskickers comes in to fill the gap. Taking a style very similar to the popular title Double Dragon, The Asskickers places the player in control of one out of three characters. Outside of cosmetic details there doesn't appear to be any true difference besides the stats of the character - be warned, though - choosing anything other than the strongest one will most likely result in frequent death.

The Asskickers

The Asskickers starts with the player inside Wong's dojo which, for one reason or another, gets invaded by frat boys. The player defends the dojo, beats up their leader, (only to find out it's the president's son), gets taken to prison, and has to clear their name. Truthfully, the store is little more than a completely ridiculous tale spanning multiple locations with one or two new enemies per zone. Thankfully the game's self-aware and never takes itself too seriously throughout your adventure.
