Nintendo: All Access E3 Presentation - Play by Play

Nintendo

Nintendo held a surprisingly low key, Wii U focused press conference earlier today. Serving as a follow up of sorts to Sunday's Wii U oriented Nintendo Direct presentation, today's event consisted mainly of a Wii U software showcase. Shigeru Miyamoto began with a short Pikmin skit, hyping up the third game in the franchise by super-imposing the creatures on different audience members. Miyamoto continued by reiterating that the Wii U's goal was to reinvent the concept of the television/console relationship; the fact that consoles are dependent on the television is rather limiting. The Wii U was developed with it's own screen to circumvent this. Miyamoto stressed that he wanted the Wii U to be the first screen players and family would see when entering the living room. Pikmin 3 was first name-dropped several years ago, and it was thought it would be in development for the Wii. However, upon seeing the Wii U hardware in action, Miyamoto thought Pikmin 3 would be better suited on the Wii U and given an experience that isn't possible on any other platform.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous thanks to the horsepower of the new console. The gameplay of Pikmin 3 is very similar to the first two Pikmin, but Miyamoto found that the Wii U solved issues addressed in the first two games. He spoke of the camera issues, saying if it was too far away, one could see the landscape better, but couldn't see the Pikmin well enough to control them accurately. The Wii U has solved this puzzle, as one can see an expanded, natural setting on the Wii U game pad's screen, and the view on the television is more free because of this. The player can touch the map to more effectively place the Pikmin in different areas, and the game gets much more tactical because of this. The main game is controlled by aiming and throwing with the Wii remote and movement with the nunchuk. A new rock-type Pikmin was revealed, and it's uses were demonstrated by doling out more damage to enemies, and breaking down objects and obstacles faster than the other Pikmin types. Opening up multiplayer options was the announcement of four additional captains to control, but any information other than that will come at a later date. In closing, the hero of the previous Pikmin tiles, Capitain Olimar, was mysteriously absent from the title, and Miyamoto went on to say the reason for this was a secret.

When Reggie Fils-Aime took the stage, he promised 23 Wii U titles to hit the stage during the conference, though many of these were third party titles, teased in a sizzle reel. As has become a standard with any home console, planned Hulu Plus, Youtube, Amazon Video, and Netflix apps were announced to be available at launch, with "more on the way".

Watch Dogs Reveal Trailer

Watch Dogs

One of E3's biggest surprises this year came from yesterday's seemingly out of nowhere reveal for Ubisoft Montreal's Watch Dogs. How could a game this intriguing not be leaked? How did Ubisoft keep this a secret? In any case, below follows the 2 minute reveal trailer for the game.

Beyond this reveal trailer, and the 10 minutes of early gameplay footage that was demoed onstage, few details exist about this title. As of this writing, neither a release window nor any specific consoles were mentioned.

"A computer now controls a major city - but who controls the computer?"

Sony E3 2012 Press Event Wrap Up

Playstation Logo

Sony held the last pre-E3 press conference of the evening today, once again at the LA Memorial Sports Arena. This year, Sony clearly had software as their top priority. As widely speculated, David Cage announced Quantic Dream's next IP, a supernatural thriller called Beyond: Two Souls. Academy Award nominee Ellen Page was revealed as the voice (and character model) of the game's protagonist, Jodi Holmes. Quantic Dream's new engine, as originally shown off in the Kara tech demo, is in full use here. As a result, even at this early stage, visuals have a fluid, near photorealistic look to them.

Following last April's announcement of the Super Smash Bros-esque Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale, today, Sony confirmed a Vita version as well, set to launch concurrently with the Playstation 3 edition, with cross-play support. Expect familiar faces abound, including Fat Princess, Sly Cooper, Kratos, and Sweet Tooth. Two new characters were unveiled; Nathan Drake and Big Daddy from Bioshock. Both the Playstation 3 and PS Vita versions will be available this holiday season.

Speaking of cross play, new cross platform functionality was teased for Little Big Planet 2, via upcoming DLC to be released later this year.

On the online front, Sony announced that 200+ new download titles will be available for the PS3, and Playstation Plus will *not* see new pricing tiers at this time. It will, however, feature higher caliber free games - including full versions of Infamous 2 and Little Big Planet 2, starting tomorrow. In addition, the Vita will see no fewer than 60 new downloadable titles, and will be getting Hulu Plus and Crackle apps in a future update.

Ubisoft E3 2012 Press Conference Wrap Up

Ubisoft

Ubisoft, the third publisher of the day to hold their annual pre-E3 press conference, had a number of exciting games to show off this year. First up at the Aisha Tyler hosted event, a troupe of dancers greeted press conference attendees with a choreographed Just Dance 4 announcement, complete with a surprise performance by Flo Rida.

Following Just Dance 4, came something a bit more action oriented - a stage demo of Farcry 3's story mode. Featuring a lush tropical environment, brutal combat, and a decidedly trippy looking end sequence, Farcry3 will be available September 4, for XBox 360, PC, and Playstation 3.

Continuing the action oriented segement of their press conference, Ubisoft showed off the "Welcome to Fourth Echelon" trailer for Splinter Cell: Blacklist, along with a reveal teaser for the upcoming Avengers: Battle for Earth title, coming to Xbox 360 and Wii U this fall.

EA Download 2012 Wrap Up

EA E3

EA held their annual E3 press conference earlier today, kicking things off with a new trailer for Dead Space 3, along with a stage demo for the game's just confirmed co-op mode. Featuring drop in, drop out 2 player, we are introduced to a new character: John Carver. Also introduced was a new, hoth-like ice planet, sometime during act 2 of the game. Opting for less of the atmospheric scares of the first two games, in favor of large scale action, Dead Space 3 will hit stores next February. Next up, came Madden 13. Madden fans can expect a new graphics engine, called infinity, as well as an all new connected careers gameplay mode. Connected careers mode has a story surrounding your league, along with a (fictitious) in-game virtual twitter feed.

On the social gaming front, just as The Sims did last year, Sim City is hitting Facebook in a big way. Sim City: Social will be free to play, and will be coming to Facebook within the next few weeks. On a second Sim City note, a new PC based version has been announced, featuring a new graphics engine, and in a series first, multiplayer. Sim City will be launching for the PC next February.
