Double Fine Announces XBLA Exclusive at GDC

Trenched Screenshot

Tim Schafer, producer of Brutal Legend, has announced his next project. "Turn no-man's land into real man's land." This clever play on words referencing WWI trenches is the premise of Double Fine Productions' newest title. The game is called Trenched; it features mobile trench warfare. The mobile trenches look like the bottom half of a mech with a trench on the top complete with sandbags, soldiers and artillery.

Although no details have been announced, just like any mech game the mobile trenches are customizable, which was showcased as a major aspect of the game. The trailer also implied that there will be coop with players from around the world. Check out the trailer here. Trenched is an XBLA exclusive.

Catherine Coming to the US this Summer

Catherine Logo

It has officially been confirmed that publisher Atlus will be releasing Team Persona’s Catherine stateside. That said, we should be seeing Catherine strut her stuff on to store shelves sometime this summer. The title will be available on both the Playstation 3, and the Xbox 360.

This announcement comes unexpectedly; considering that only a few days earlier Atlus had stated that it had no plans of releasing the title in North America. Perhaps the change was prompted by how well the game was received in Japan, having sold 162,000 copies in it’s first week alone. Following Atlus' self-contradictory announcement, a series of screenshots, as well as the first English language trailer for the game, have been put up. Check them out at CatherineTheGame.com.

New Take-Two Domains May Tie Into GTA V

Take 2 Logo With the looming leviathan known as Grand Theft Auto V somewhere in our distant future, Take-Two has begun to spin the web of rumors and excitement. With the recent registration of various domain names it appears as if Take-Two is repeating their viral campaign from Grand Theft Auto IV.

Registered domains include:

  • CashForDeadDreams.com
  • SixFigureTemps.com
  • StopPayingYourMortgage.net
  • HammersteinFaust.com
  • LifeInvader.com

Granted, it may not seem like much, but anything to curb our appetites for sandbox glory is a good thing. The only possible connection between all of these domains is money. Maybe the next Grand Theft Auto will feature an area destroyed by the recent drop in the economy? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, post your ideas and speculation below.

GDC Logo

Reggie Fils-Amie, Nintendo's Chief Operating Officer, has just announced several new features for Nintendo's forthcoming 3DS handheld. A new partnership with AT&T for distribution of spot pass content, an upcoming Nintendo Channel for the 3DS, and perhaps the biggest surprise, planned Netflix Watch Instantly support for the portable, were all revealed.

This summer, the 3DS will become the next device - and first handheld gaming system - to support Netflix Instant Streaming, for video on the go.

Panasonic Scraps The Jungle Handheld

The Jungle

After a decade long hiatus from the gaming industry, Panasonic made a bold move last October announcing the development of a handheld online gaming device. The device, tentatively named “Jungle” was designed to be the world’s first and only MMO centric portable.

While final specs were for the handheld were not disclosed, it was purported to have a full QWERTY keyboard and a touch pad.

According to Panasonic, the decision to scrap the Jungle was based upon “changes in the market and in our own strategic direction.” With the imminent release of the Nintendo 3DS and Sony’s forthcoming PSP successor, it stands to reason Panasonic may have been worried about the competition, and potential market saturation.

Along with the announcement of The Jungle last October, Panasonic created a subsidiary called Panasonic Cloud Entertainment. With their only known project scrapped it’s anyone's guess as to what, if anything, they are working on now.
