Sony E3 2012 Press Event Wrap Up

Sony held the last pre-E3 press conference of the evening today, once again at the LA Memorial Sports Arena. This year, Sony clearly had software as their top priority. As widely speculated, David Cage announced Quantic Dream's next IP, a supernatural thriller called Beyond: Two Souls. Academy Award nominee Ellen Page was revealed as the voice (and character model) of the game's protagonist, Jodi Holmes. Quantic Dream's new engine, as originally shown off in the Kara tech demo, is in full use here. As a result, even at this early stage, visuals have a fluid, near photorealistic look to them.

Following last April's announcement of the Super Smash Bros-esque Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale, today, Sony confirmed a Vita version as well, set to launch concurrently with the Playstation 3 edition, with cross-play support. Expect familiar faces abound, including Fat Princess, Sly Cooper, Kratos, and Sweet Tooth. Two new characters were unveiled; Nathan Drake and Big Daddy from Bioshock. Both the Playstation 3 and PS Vita versions will be available this holiday season.

Speaking of cross play, new cross platform functionality was teased for Little Big Planet 2, via upcoming DLC to be released later this year.

On the online front, Sony announced that 200+ new download titles will be available for the PS3, and Playstation Plus will *not* see new pricing tiers at this time. It will, however, feature higher caliber free games - including full versions of Infamous 2 and Little Big Planet 2, starting tomorrow. In addition, the Vita will see no fewer than 60 new downloadable titles, and will be getting Hulu Plus and Crackle apps in a future update.

More on the Vita, both Call of Duty: Black Ops - Declassified and Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation were both announced. Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation will launch on October 30, along with a crystal white Vita bundle, featuring the a 3G/Wifi Vita, a 4gb memory card, and a copy of the game.

In continuing their AC3 related announcements, Ubisoft took the stage to show a never before seen gameplay segment, this time, featuring a first to the Assassin's Creed franchise: naval combat. That's right, Connor will be taking to the high seas, as well! As with the Vita version, the PS3 version will also ship with a console bundle.

In other Ubisoft related announcements at Sony's press event, a four player co-op mode was revealed - and subsequently demoed onstage, along with a map editor. PS3 users will receive a free, system exclusive DLC.

Perhaps the oddest announcement of the night came in the form of Wonderbook, an A/R capable, move supported, physical book peripheral. The first Wonderbook will be a collaboration between Sony and Hotter Potter author J.K. Rowling, called Book of Spells.

A quick announcement regarding rebranding of Playstation Suite to Playstation Mobile followed, and support for non Sony devices; beginning with HTC phones was announced. (More info to follow upon availability).

As expected, God of War: Ascension single player was demoed, showcasing familiar attack mechanics and quick time events of the prior games, while also introducing a new time shift feature. With the new ability, certain structures can be reconstructed, upon being destroyed. God of War: Ascension will be released on March 12, 2013.

Sony closed out their E3 Press Event with the an extended gameplay demo of Naughty Dog's eagerly anticipated action/adventure, The Last of Us. If the demo is any indication, expect brutal, no holds barred combat, gritty visuals, and mature themes. No release date was available at this time.
