Gears of War 3 Beta Details Emerge

Gears of War 3, undoubtedly one of the Xbox 360’s most anticipated games this year, not only receives a release date, but a multiplayer beta that will include exclusive extras for Gears heads to use in the retail copy upon release.

Gears 3 hits store shelves on 9/20, but if you can’t wait that long to get locked n’ loaded and ready for action, then maybe the multiplayer beta will serve as a little taste to tide you over until emergence day.

Microsoft and developer Epic Games have announced that the beta will take place sometime around mid-April. Aside from just playing the beta, the gamers will also have a chance to acquire a Gold Retro Lancer and Cole Train in classic Thrashball pads.

These items are not just given to you though, both will require a bit of good old fashioned button mashing. For the Gold Retro Lancer you'll need to rack up 90 matches in the beta or 100 kills, presumably whichever comes first. On the other hand, Cole in classic pads only takes 70 matches to unlock, but then another 13 matches to keep him for the retail copy. Players will also receive a ‘Beta Tester’ title just for participating in the beta (for bragging rights, of course).

As far as maps and modes that will appear in the beta, it’s still unclear, beyond that it will include three versus modes spanning four maps. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for two of the four maps via Facebook poll. The four maps up for voting are as follows; Overpass, Old Town, Mercy, and Trenches. This poll can be found here. Voting ends on 2/28, so hurry!

The beta itself will be open to everyone on a first come first serve basis, or purchase the Epic Edition of Bulletstorm, while supplies last, to guarantee a slot in the beta.

UPDATE: An exclusive Inside Xbox video which can be found here begins to bring the Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta to life with new details announced by Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski and Executive Producer Rod Fergusson. These details reveal 1 gameplay mode, Team Death-Match, and 2 maps, Checkout and Thrashball, to be featured in the beta.
